FCIS – Big
Fish Bash on Cass Lake Is All That!
Tournament Director
Tim Widlacki
Almost 200 anglers from 14 different states competed in the PMTT – Farm
& City Insurance Services Big Fish Bash - on the world renowned Cass
Lake on August 24th & 25th in north central Minnesota. An event
sponsored by FCIS, Cass Lake is known for its exceptional musky fishing
and always one of the top producers for big fish in the country and for
the trail, this year was no exception.
Under mostly sunny skies with S.W. winds at 5 mph and air temps in the
mid 70’s the muskies put on quite the showing as the anglers boated 23
during the two day event, with six of them being forty eight inches or
longer. It was really across the board as muskies were caught everywhere
and on almost every kind of bait. There really didn’t seem to be any one
certain type of pattern going until everyone heard the post tournament
interviews with the winners.
The team of Kirk Willberg and Sam McSharry both from the Bemidgi MN area
caught three muskies of 45.50”, 45.50”, and 48.50”. They were the only
team to triple and while many anglers cast traditional sized muskies
baits at weed edges, reeds and flats, Willberg and McSharry cast
bucktail over the cabbage beds.
Not wanting to pre-fish and burn any fish on their spots, they relied on
past experience and their knowledge of the lake to come up with their
attack. This turned out to be the hot pattern as quite a few of the top
placing teams produced fish this same way. MacSharry and Willberg took
home the first place hardware at the FCIS – Farm & City Insurance
Services Big Fish Bash and a check for almost $14,000.
The team of Jason Summers & Troy Bilbrey both from the twin cities area,
caught two fish of 49.50” and 43” on a new proto type lure called the
Scorpion. This bait has been hot for them all year and they moved around
a lot constantly in search of active fish as they caught each fish at
different ends of the lake. They were also the Ranger Cup winners for an
extra $1,000 for the highest placing registered Ranger Boat owner. This
is amazingly, Jason Summers 6th time for winning the Ranger Cup. Their
run and gun technique was good enough for second place honors and a
check for $4500.
Jeff Anderson & Mike Crawford, both locals from the area, were able to
catch two fish of 43” & 47” while also casting bucktails over cabbage
beds to land them the third place trophies and a check for $3,000. Tom
Ustazewski & George Benda from the south Chicago IL suburbs boated the
big fish of the tournament at 49.50”. They worked the weed flats with
Cowgirls and took home forth place trophies and just under $3,000 for
their efforts.
Rounding out the top five is the team of Joey Reed & Jimmy Barnes. They
fished up to the end on day two and boated big fish of the day at 49”
which would place them in fifth place with around $2,000.
Present from Farm & City Insurance Services was Chris Higgins. She
thanked everyone for being there and talked about the partnership
between the PMTT and FCIS. Chris also explained to the folks that FCIS
was not only a sponsor of the PMTT but that they support all types of
fishing and that they have programs and policies to meet everyone
expectations and needs.
Tournament Director Tim Widlacki thanked all of the PMTT’s incredibly
fantastic sponsors, especially Farm & City Insurance Services for
sponsoring the tournament. In addition Ranger Boats, Mercury Marine,
Musky Hunter Magazine, Heckel's Marine, Keyes Outdoors Television,
Rollie & Helens Musky Shop, Wildlife Energy Drink, Extreme Muskie
Expo's, Crash's Landing, Morehead Tourism Commission, Eagle River Area
Chamber of Commerce, Village of Antioch & the Antioch Chamber of
Commerce, all the Cass Lake area business that supported this event and
all of the associate and contributing sponsors. Please let these fine
folks know that you appreciate their promotional efforts in support of
freshwaters most challenging fish … and those extreme anglers who chase
her on the first, best and only truly National Professional Musky
Circuit … the PMTT!
