Thomas and Grant Win PMTT
PMTT Press Release Editor,
Out of the ordinary summer like air and water temperatures welcomed the Professional Musky Tournament Trails 110 teams registered to kick off the 2017 season at the PMTT Vitaminerals Spring Shootout on Cave Run Lake in Morehead, Ky April 29th & 30th. With the air temperatures in the upper 80`s, mostly sunny skies with light west winds and the water temperatures around 70 degrees, this possibly could have had the fish move to many different areas than normal this time of year and because the muskies were all finished spawning. A lot of shad were suspended in deeper water and timber areas and many of the 33 registered muskies were caught jigging and trolling these deeper areas
Longtime and well known muskie guides from Cave Run Lake, Tony Grant of Frenchburg, KY and Gregg Thomas of Morehead, KY caught two muskies to hold on to first place by two points and win the Vitaminerals Spring Shootout. These two Pro anglers have won several PMTT tournaments over the years but a win on their home waters of Cave Run Lake has eluded them both until now. This was a really great win for Grant and Thomas as many pro anglers know everyone expects the home town angler to win on their own lake, but it becomes difficult because of the amount of tough competition that you fish against in the pro trail. One of the fish that Grant and Thomas caught was relating to a weed bed that Thomas had been catching fish off of in the prior week with clients. The second musky was caught trolling deep timber with 10 inch crank baits. The second fish was also a monster of a musky and netted the two anglers $500 for big fish as it measured 48.25 inches. With the win Grant and Thomas received two beautiful trophies and a payout of $17,000 cash!
In second place were Jeremy Burris of Elgin, IL and Scott Poplowski of South Elgin, IL. These two anglers caught three muskies that were 44.25, 35 and 34.50 inches jigging tube jigs in 15-20 feet of water 10 feet down in the water column. In third place were Dave Johnson of Cox's Creek, Ky and Chris Haley of Hazard, Ky. Johnson and Haley caught 43 and 35.50 inch muskies while pitching to main lake lay-down trees and brush piles with Boggs Mohawks. In fourth place were the father and son team of Dan Germann and Alec Germann of White Bear Lake, MN. These two anglers netted and released two muskies that were 41 and 31.50 inches. The two anglers caught one trolling crank baits and the other twitching a 6 inch crank bait very erratically. In fifth place were the Michlig brothers Matt from Milwaukee, WI. and Ben from Minocqua, WI. The two anglers trolled Medussa’s in the Licking River to catch two muskies that measured 37.75 and 31.25 inches. The final tournament statistics were 22 muskies caught on Saturday and 11 more on Sunday for a total of 33 total muskies and the vast majority of the baits used were either shad pattern or bright colors.
